Races I'm Watching (2013 & 14)

Some Elections I’m watching this year Cory Booker is up according to a poll by 35 points among likely voters while Democrat Terry McAuliffe has a 7 point lead last I checked. These two Democrats are running for Senator and Governor. Cory Booker is the mayor of Newark, NJ and people were thinking he’s going to run against Chris Christie. He said “I’m going to have to work with my Governor” and I thought that’s all true and that we would have to as a mayor because all levels of government have to work together to get things done. Cory Booker I thought “he’s a rising star here” and sure enough as I live and breathe here is Booker running for the seat that was vacated with the death of the previous Senator, a Democrat. After winning the Democratic nod, he now is facing off against Lonegan, who has a nod from Christie. Lonegan is not helping himself especially when he pulled a John McHenry when he said that if you get sick, you’re on your own. Personally, I feel that while there is a l

SB14 Q&A

SB14 Q&A What is SB14? SB14 is a often called the Texas Voter ID law, passed by the Legislature and signed into law on May 27, 2011 by Texas Governor Rick Perry Why is SB14 in court? SB14 is in court because it is currently covered under the Voter Rights Act of 1965 as amended in 2006. It was amended to cover non English speaking populations but provided English only voting materials at the polls, which brought TX into its jurisdiction. Section 5 states that any change in voter law in a state that has a history of discrimination has to be pre cleared by the Department of Justice or a 3 Judge Panel in DC. It was rejected for preclearance and the trial date expedited so SB14 could be in place for the November election if upheld   What does SB14 do? It requires photo ID at the polls, yet the kinds of ID are specified below: Specifically, prospective voters will need to provide (1) one piece of “primary identification,” (2) two pieces of “secondary identificati

Hair in the Public Square

Rhonda Lee is a woman who used to be a meteorologist for KTSB until she was fired. She was fired over really defending her hair in a positive very mature way. Now, this station had gotten racist comments on their Facebook pages and in this snippet, KTSB 3 actually LIKED the post she got fired over in essence. She was told that she was being fired over a social media policy that was unwritten. My guess is that they wanted her gone and found a reason to do so. She claims that her hair had gotten her in trouble before. I wonder why. See hair is not only an extension of ourselves, it’s a way that we can be creative, when a woman changes her hair she wants people to notice because it looks nice and she feels good. She’s fishing for compliments and when you pay them to her by noticing her hair it feels good. Then the post of “she looks like a hot mess cancer patient comes up” the post Emmett Vascou put up says: the black lady that does the news is a very nice lady. The only thing is she nee

Mayoral, Common Council and County Legislature & Sherriff Primaries and Races 2013

Hey everyone, it’s getting close to Primary Day when we go and select who we want to be our nominee. Democrats in my city will pick between these 2 guys, Byron Brown and Bernie Tolbert. Byron Brown is the incumbent and Tolbert has an uphill battle on his hands. Buffalo News had an article that Bernie would get trounced 2-1 if the primary were held that day so I hope that maybe there will be a bit better news come the morning September 11 th (12 year anniversary) So in this primary I will be backing Bernie Tolbert and see if that helps. If not, I will be voting for Sergio as I don’t really know what to think of Tolbert but then again some of the things Sergio advocates for alarms me like Mayoral control of education. Chicago Rahm Emmanuel close many schools and build a stadium, I guess they can go there to get their education now that those I believe 50 schools are closing. So that is a bit of a snafu for me. He did talk about Mayor Bloomberg of NYC and his success with reformi

San Antonio Progresses, Backlash Against Red Regression

After much contention and debate we hear the fate of the San Antonio non-discrimination ordinance.   A few weeks ago Elisa Chan had come under fire for calling gays disgusting and saying they shouldn’t adopt children, she tried to take a traditional road by saying she has nothing against gays but when you’re calling us disgusting and ridiculing our families, that’s like messing with Mama Bear’s cubs. You will lose…BIG. Supporters of the ordinance wore red shirts and the opponents wore blue as they were given one more chance to give an impassioned plea to support or reject the ordinance. Republicans from Greg Abbot who’s running to replace Rick Perry weighed in and is seeing what they can do to counter the measure. This is an issue of life and death for a woman named Dee Villarubia, 67, said she's a former Air Force officer whose landlord at a San Antonio apartment evicted her two years ago because she is gay. "When I say the pledge of allegiance, I say `justice for

Minimum Wage, Syria, Booker's Gay Rumor and a Recall???!!!!

Imagine going into work, and you’re making $15/hour, you get full medical benefits and you have a union that fights for you. We don’t have to imagine it we can make it. I’ve advocated for lifting the floor called the minimum wage which simply says: I’d pay you less but it’s illegal. It’s also something that we need to advocate for farm workers too because the labor and farm movement are tied together with a fine thread that must not be severed. I recently thought about the arguments regarding the minimum wage hike and what people have said and you’ll hear a lot of people saying that it’ll hurt business but they can afford to pay $15/hr. and more, they pay way more than that to CEOs who get taxpayer subsidies for part of it. Not only that but we already pay for Wal-Mart Workers Medicaid, Food Stamps and other social programs. Wal-Mart is a multibillion dollar a year operation it is foolishness to believe that they can’t afford it or is under attack for being demanded of to pay their
