Real Newsblast Episode 5: Tax Bill Rewrites, Child Brides, Walkout

Tax Reform Bill may have to be rewritten

So, we remember when the tax scam was passed hastily? It’s infamous for the handwritten changes they made hours before it was to be passed, and it got rid of the State and Local Taxes Deduction—SALT—which disproportionately hurt higher tax/blue states. It also got rid of the deduction for teachers and supplies. It also has something about S corporations that allow a rich person to save more money, something called a pass through. So after the Kochs invested in Paul Ryan to the tune of a half million dollars (make note: Most of it was to a PAC for Republicans), we are seeing headlines that the bill may need to be rewritten. The fiscal times reports on two specific areas that will have to be fixed in the legislation

The ‘Grain Glitch’: The legislation allows farmers to deduct 20 percent of their total sales to cooperatives. “This allows farmers to deeply reduce their tax bills, but it has caused an uproar among independent agriculture businesses that say they can no longer compete with cooperatives, since farmers would choose to sell to cooperatives to take advantage of the more generous tax break,” the Times reports. Independent grain companies have lobbied Congress for a fix, warning that the provision makes it impossible for their businesses to compete with the co-ops.

Next, restaurants are now having an issue with the tax bill:

Some of those changes can be done through the US Treasury, but the bulk of the changes must be made through Congress. When Republicans passed this through reconciliation, they can only use it once per session I believe. They would need to have Democratic support and if Democrats don’t give up their leverage they could reverse some of the things that made the GOP Tax Scam so insidious. Also, let’s remember that if Democrats don’t cave they can get some of those deductions back that regular people lost. Those are my hopes, but they’re not very high

Now let’s go to both Kentucky and Tennessee where in Kentucky efforts to ban child marriages had been stalled.  First Kentucky According to Huffington Post, The conservative group Family Foundation of Kentucky has been behind the delay of SB48 which would prohibit the marriage of a 17 year old unless a judge certifies it. Right now, 16 and 17 year olds can marry with their parents’ approval and even younger if a pregnancy is involved. Remember, this was legal in 2004 when Kentucky passed a constitutional prohibition on the gays getting married. A spokeswoman for the organization said that she supports the bill overall but wants to mandate that parents agree before it can go to a Judge. Since then, Kentucky Senate has passed a bill 34-3 with that concern addressed, it now heads to the KY State House

The Tennessee bill was killed and later revived according to The Tennessean State Rep Darren Jernigan has called for their law to reflect a change to make the effective age of consent to 18. State Senator Yarbro has found a loophole that allows a judge to grant marriage regardless of the age. The bill was sent for summer study—effectively killing the bill. Majority Leader Cascada later said he didn’t want to pass this bill and interfere with a legal challenge to undo Obergefell.

The Majority Leader reports being shocked that girls as young as 12 could be forcibly married to an older man which most of the marriages tend to be and because they’re minors, it’s nearly impossible for them to take action to end these marriages. The Tennessee Department of Health says that in 2016, there were 42 grooms and 166 brides who were under 18 years of age at the time of marriage. Discussion can begin on it, but I am not sure what will happen to it in the TN State Senate

UPDATE: The bill has been tabled again, one State Senator wanted to have an exemption for 17 year olds who may be going to active duty.

On the one month anniversary of the Parkland shooting, students took to the streets for 17 minutes to protest the lack of action of the part of legislators. Background checks, banning of bump stocks and of most assault style weapons are part of the demands. From one part of the country to the other many took to the streets. Some school districts threatened suspension and some students found a way to work around it by taking a knee for 17 minutes to be in solidarity.

The next time someone tells you that young people are apathetic show them a news clip or picture of all these students walking out for safer schools and an end to gun violence.. I am drawing on the side of these students because prayers and thoughts without action is useless, I then saw a tweet about a bill filed about animal cruelty within 48 hours of the Congressmember hearing of it…yet we don’t have a bill to remedy the deaths of 17 children other than arming teachers. They hypocrisy is alarming on this one.
