Real Newsblast Episode 9: The Scott Blues

Wisconsin State Senate District 10’s was called for January 15th and Democrat Patty Schactner defeated State Rep Adam Jarchow to claim the seat for Democrats. Additionally, there were two other seats that Governor Walker is refusing to hold special elections for due to his fear of those seats possibly having a Democrat elected to it. Further, there was a bill that the Legislature is taking up to give the Governor the ability to determine when to hold special elections, even if those elections would not be held until the next election cycle. This kind of move would leave many Wisconsinites unrepresented.

Scott Walker then had to face a Court and has until March 29th to call special elections which would likely happen in June. Walker’s team argued that the filing time is in April and that it would lead to confusion—there are only two seats—for voters regarding who is running in which election but I don’t buy it. It is not the first, but second time he has had to come to a Court on this issue. He didn’t appeal it to the Supreme Court where he has allies on it

Wisconsin Supreme Court seat flips

Rebecca Dallet, supported by Democrats has won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court to replace outgoing justice Michael Gableman. While the elections are nonpartisan, the election did fall along party lines. Dallet took 56% of the vote Screnock took 44%. This is one of the things Walker if he had any say in it would’ve tried to block if at all possible. The court’s conservative majority now dwindles from 5-2 to 4-3.

She also won at least 24 different counties across Wisconsin that Clinton had lost and kept Democratic strongholds as well, which didn’t hurt. Wisconsin is trending blue and speaking of it

Gov. Walker has tweeted about how angry the far left is and wants to counter it with civility. Act 10 wasn’t all that civil, neither was the voter ID law you signed, nor the myriad of ways you’ve hurt Wisconsin since you were elected Walker.

Florida Governor Rick Scott’s scheme of restoring voter rights was overturned in February the result of a lawsuit brought by Fair Elections Legal Network, who represented nine Plaintiffs who’ve not had their voting rights restored to them despite going through the process

A former felon must complete all of their probation and go before a board that includes the Governor. In the ruling by Judge Walker (not to be confused with Gov. Scott Walker) he said in his ruling that there were many people who even joked about illegally voting for Gov. Rick Scott who had their voting rights restored. The Tallahassee Democrat put it this way: Walker noted several instances "of former felons who professed political views amenable to the board's members, who then received voting rights, while those who expressed contrary political views to the board were denied those same rights."
He went on to say that "viewpoint discrimination is deeply antithetical to the Constitution and our nation's longstanding values

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Gov Christ automatically restored 150k nonviolent former felons rights and Jeb Bush more than 73k, Since Gov Scott took office that number plummeted to less than 3k. Also, there are only 4 times a year someone can come to get their rights reinstated and there is a backlog of more than 10,000 cases.

The state later argued in court that since Rick Scott stands with the victims of crimes, he can deny anyone the restoration of their rights. But court is not the only venue in which Floridians will seek to get automatic voting rights restoration. Amendment 4 will be on the ballot to do so circumventing the Governor, should it be approved by 60% of voters.

But that is background to a bigger story: Rick Scott and AG Pam Bondi said that the remedy they were ordered to prepare from February for April 26th, is an unreasonable amount of time. No kidding. They had two months to do this and didn’t bother because they knew they were going to appeal it.

Rick Scott, Amendment 4 and an appeal. I’m hoping this gets struck down by the 11th Circuit as well, but we never know based on what panel we get
