Gay Marriage New York

New York Is Close

Hello everyone,

I am really proud to be a New Yorker. In 2011, three states--MD, RI and NY were being looked into for being state number 6 for civil marriage. MD has shelved their bill until 2012 and RI is now contemplating civil unions which is a let down but is a step in the right direction. CT, NH, ME and VT had civil unions before enacting marriage. Unfortunately, a people's veto has scrapped ME's marriage equality law.

New York is a great state, we have had a long legacy of progressive movements, the women's voting movement, the NAACP, Housing and Urban Development, the Gay Rights Movement that started with Stonewall. Immigrants have come here from Italy, Ireland, so many different countries that made NYC a wonderfully diverse place to live. We have so much to be proud of for this state. We have made a lot of progress but also there is much to be made. Marriage needs to pass, and if this doesn't pass, I know for one the gay community is going to go apeshit!

Apeshit for Marriage

In 2009, an attempt to pass marriage in NYS failed by 8 votes 38-24. A few of the Senators that voted no on the bill have now left the Senate. Hiram Monserrate was kicked out for domestic violence, Senator Huntley is under investigation for a charity pol that benefit members of her family, and Carl Krueger is on the hook for a corruption charge. Also, Bill Stachowski is out of the Senate--Buffalo activists from OUTspoken for Equality did that!

I have pounded the pavement, attended letter writing parties, helped send out addressed envelopes, helped people make phone calls, attended rallies, seen people work tirelessly, hear about many people who said that their activism has put pressure on many things and people, relationships in their lives. It is about time

If this bill doesn't pass, the Senators know they're going to have an angry constituency that will not forget what happened. They know for a fact that this will be the last time we hear a NO vote, and that we will not go away. Kathy Young, Pat Gallivan and Mike Ranzenhofer have believed that we would go away, but they know that we will not. We will do whatever we need to in order to get that across.

I can't think about this next vote being a No vote. We will be angry, aggressive, and do whatever we need to do to win our rights.

Love You All
