Plethora of Good Black News

Dr Marc Lamont Hill was in Buffalo October 26 th and it was a great night for good black news. Organizations like ECC, Buffalo Believe, and Open Buffalo along with a myriad of groups fighting for racial, social and economic justice were tabling and giving out information. Open Buffalo’s Franchelle Hart was the MC for the evening. Let me pause right here to tell you what Open Buffalo has promised to do in the face of a hostile federal government pushing to undo many years of progress ü   Create innovative systemic reforms to combat epidemic poverty and Buffalo’s affordable housing crisis ü   Create equal access to economic opportunities ü   Bring training and civic engagement opportunities to marginalized communities They also will be having an annual fundraising breakfast on Tuesday December 5 th at 8am. Please support them in their mission by visiting openbuffalo.org After the MC opened and got things rolling, we were treated to Jillian Hanesworth’s Little ...

A New Shero

Image
A New Shero (Youtube video: https://youtu.be/CRVoHyg-EpA) While looking up a black woman I wanted to highlight for History Remembered, I wanted to look at people who were living. Well, I found a living legend in the form of Ms. Ibtihaj Muhammad Ms. Muhammad is a fencer who was seeking to compete but also adhere to modesty as per her religious beliefs. Fed up with uniforms that had to be altered to cover her arms and legs, her discovery of fencing was a Godsend. She competed and finished her first year of Duke with 49-8. In the 2010s she received many medals and honors including an Olympic medal in 2016. She also is the first competitive fencer to do so while wearing a hijab. Now, let’s be clear many Christian women around the world wear head coverings so why is wearing a hijab so notable? It should just be like “Oh okay, she wears a head covering” and keep it moving So, back to the topic she is being honored with her own Barbie doll. I nearly lost it because I ‘m like “Yasss...

Black Women Rock! 10 Black Women Everyone Should Know

Image
Black Women Rock : 10 Black Women Everyone Should Know About When I was looking up Octavius Catto, I decided to look at notable black women and though I found a LOT of notable ones, even those I hadn't heard of prior. I had to shout out black women and how they rocked this world! So, enjoy and I'll put up the link when I film and edit the video on Youtube!  Most of the information from this video is taken from Biography.com. The link ( https://www.biography.com/people/groups/african-american-firsts-women ) 10 Ida B Wells Barnett Best known as Ida B Wells, she was primarily known for her journalism and was an early figure in the Civil Rights Movement. After the murder of a friend, Wells went about investigating reasons black men were lynched. She found the reasons: Not giving way to whites, competing economically with whites, and the go to reason: an attack or rape of a white woman. She published her findings in an 1892 pamphlet called South...

Hillary Clinton: What Happened?

There she goes again! Secretary Clinton goes on the attack when it comes to the question of:  What happened? Some answers....  Marginalizing Bernie supporters as white males #BernieMadeMeWhite Dismissing third party voters Not campaigning in FL MI NC WI and PA where she lost. Had she turned at least FL and two of the other states she would have won The fact that she didn’t really excite people Constantly saying “Isn’t it time we had a woman in the White House?” Acting as if she was entitled to our votes and the Election was a formality (I call that the Coronation) Refusing to speak out on the bias against Bernie Sanders Adopting Bernie’s positions when it was convenient for her Example: When she showed up to Albany for the signing ceremony of a $15/hr minimum wage bill when she only supported a $12/hr minimum wage #notHerVictory Evolving only when the political climate was right for it (Marriage Equality in 2013 and describing DOMA as...

Gay PRIDE Flag spat in 450 words or less

The Gay PRIDE flag is no stranger to controversy; homophobic people hate it because it acknowledges gay people exist. Puerto Ricans have a PRIDE flag, Australia and the US have one combined with its national flag and rainbow. Religions have chipped in with a Jewish PRIDE have a Star of David and there is one for Gay Muslims too with their crescent moon and star. Today, a PRIDE so called controversy exists and it has been started in Philadelphia where black and brown stripes were added to the gay PRIDE flag. Where’s the white one? “Well, you have enough film and TV roles, opportunity in this country, you can go a whole lifetime not seeing another race (or having really limited contact with them) in some places you live and you’re pissed off about a stripe?!” This screen capture shows one response that was a YUGE mic drop! See, black LGBTs started Stonewall and as the movement got bigger and bigger white men and women dominated it. Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson were la...
