Eddie Long, Eddie Wrong
Hello Everyone,
Sexual Repression and Scandal
I have to say that I am not surprised whenever I see an anti-gay politician or religious leader caught in the muck and mire they claim isn't right. Like Gary Aldridge who was found with two rubber masks, two pairs of rubber underwear, leather pants, boots, with a dildo up his rear with a condom on (either it was part of a safe sex lecture or it was a part of the fetish?) What about Roy Ashburn coming up with a lot of anti gay legislation and then being found with a Latino gentleman (he was in fact against immigration too).
So why am I not surprised that of all people Bishop Eddie Long is found guilty--accused rather of that which he preached against? Like George Alan Rekers, Glenn Murphy Jr, Ted Haggard, Chris Lee, Jim McGreevey, Troy King, Jim West, Richard Curtis, Bruce Barclay, Larry Craig, Ed Schrock, Robert Allen, Mark Foley, Karl Krueger, Eric Massa, David Dreier, and of course we have the founders of Exodus International and even Jerry Fallwell’s National Coming out of homosexuality day founder who denounced the ex gay thing
Outrage
Now, Bishop Eddie Long has a long history of preaching against gay marriages and stating that he feels led to empower men to be the spiritual gladiators they are to be. I have been following this for a short while but the fact remains: Look at the victims! What about them and the fact that these boys were young, probably vulnerable as this man is a father like figure and a spiritual leader? These are the very aspects at play in many ex gay camps. They have kids desperate not to be gay--in this case many may not have Fathers at home and now this man is coming here, spending time with me and then he makes it plain he wants me for something a father figure shouldn't want from a spiritual son.
The Seat of Outrage
Most of my outrage comes from the black community's leaping forgiveness of this man. If this would've been an openly gay man in the church he wouldn't have been anywhere near kids, he could be good enough to be an organist, a choir director, a deacon but not youth leader or anything connected with children. This is not only openly said from the pulpit but by the membership. Most often when people spew anti gay things like: They never find true love, I always take that to mean: You haven't found it and don't think we can.
The fact that Mr. Long has said that he would 'fight this' and not proclaim his innocence. He did say however: I'm not the man that the media has portrayed me to be. I can't help but think that this is an avoidance tactic. He said he categorically denies those charges, but what he has said in the media is not very comforting because he's dancing around the ? of did he or did he not? I believe he did. So much about this whole thing just makes me apprehensive about proclaiming innocence, especially the photos he sent to those boys, they are below (that isn't a picture you'd send to your wife). He acts like a guilty man and the black community has such short memories--like celebrating that Haitian leader that bankrupted Haiti and then they welcome him back like he did nothing, or like some of the African leaders that do the same thing--and we wonder why we can't get these countries on the right track. Back home in the US, we ally ourselves with someone that is supposed to be strategic but we can't do that if we tell them that they're wrong and tell them that we can't support you the way we want to if you don't correct this—it is a reality that we compromise politically but we need to grow a backbone
Outrage at the black community
I feel like Huey Freeman sometimes, in the 2nd episode of the first season of Boondocks, R Kelly is on trial for peeing on an underage girl and people are more taken with the fact that as a black man an entertainer he's wrongfully accused and it becomes a kangaroo court. When the courtroom breaks out in dance to an R Kelly song, Huey starts to speak
HUEY FREEMAN
(turns the boom box off, causing everyone who was dancing to stop) What the hell is wrong with you people? Every famous black man that gets arrested is not Nelson Mandela! Yes, the government conspires to put a lot of innocent black men in jail on fallacious charges, but R. Kelly(slash Bishop Eddie Long) is NOT one of those men! We all KNOW the man can sing, but what happened to standards?! What happened to bare minimums?! You a fan of R. Kelly? You wanna HELP R. Kelly? Then get some COUNSELING for R. Kelly! Introduce him to some older women! Hide his camcorder! But don't pretend like the man is a hero! (walks off) (returns) And stop the damn dancing! Act like you got some dagon sense, people! Damn! Through playin' round here. (pause)
RILEY FREEMAN
Boo! Dude with the fro, give it a rest! Turn the music back on
I'm sure if you put Eddie Long in there, you can pretty much get how I feel about this. I watched a video where Long said: I'm gonna fight this. I have 5 smooth stones and I haven't thrown one yet...and he leaves to the applause of his congregants you can find that video here:
http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2010/09/26/eddie.long.sermon.cnn.html
I couldn't believe it! Bullshit detector was firing off like crazy! AND THE CONGREGATION APPLAUDED! They know that if it was any other [person not a preacher or anything, they wouldn't have let him speak in his defense but shoved him off, barred him from kids if he weren't already, but he'd be good enough to be choir director or organist. They would have made a scene reminiscent of Frankenstein! But because this man is a preacher, he is accorded some special treatment and presumption of innocence not much unlike the Catholic priests and churches? I am CONVINCED SOMEONE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON AND SIMPLY SAID NOTHING! That happens much too often in our society and then when it comes out, you had nothing to do with it.
My Indictment
It is easy to get behind Long and say that he is being slandered. But, I take another look at it: What about the victims in this case? It is hard to look at these guys and think to yourself what would they have to gain by discrediting a preacher? Why would he pay hush money if he were innocent? I've never faced court the way Long was going to, but why would an innocent man do that? Why would the black community kick out a gay youth leader and keep a preacher that would victimize young men? Why would they cheer a man that obviously has something to hide? Why would they take this from him when they would have otherwise told their kids to keep away from him and wouldn't go anywhere near him and of course vote yes on policies that would 'keep them gays in their place'
The black community needs to understand one thing...we have to stop this homophobia in our community. We have to make our community an actual community where we are political, not only for the cause of our race but for the black LGBT people in it. Black gays: If you think the face of gay rights are white, then you get in there and get involved...you need to make sure that other gay people of color know that this issue affects them because it does. No one is fighting against black people marrying, just gay people. If they will take away gay peoples’ rights, they will gun for yours and the progress we’ve made in race relations. If you are closeted and thinking that you can't come out you never will and will have to navigate a terrible terrain that can only end up in you being depressed and wondering why you can't have a healthy relationship...Come out already!
I can’t stand behind Bishop Long, He is not Nelson Mandela or an innocent man.
